One of SRM’s major successes has been to develop the manufacture of alternative fuels from organic wastes. This has been particularly valuable to the cement industry, where both Cemfuel® and Profuel have been created, helping to reduce reliance on finite fossil fuels to provide energy to fire kilns.
SRM’s partnership with Castle Cement, a sister company in the HeidelbergCement group, has existed for many years, with first trials of an alternative waste derived fuel taking place as far back as 1992.
Now a secondary liquid fuel manufactured from waste solvents, Cemfuel, and a solid fuel made from paper and certain plastics, Profuel, are increasingly used.
The importance of the search for alternative fuels derived from waste material increased in July 2004, when the EU Hazardous Waste Directive meant that few of Britain’s landfill sites remained able to accept untreated organic waste material.
SRM continues to research the possibilities of increasing the use of otherwise waste material as fuel, for the benefit of the environment and future generations.
